Anti-wrinkle Injections

Botulinum toxin, has many uses in aesthetic medicine.

It is an extremely effective cosmetic treatment to correct fine lines and wrinkles caused by excessive and repeated muscle action but can also be administered to help with various other unwanted conditions such as heavy eyebrows, gummy smile, tooth grinding, and a downturned mouth.

By customising the areas treated and the dosage given, I can achieve optimum results for each client, resulting in a refreshed and more youthful version of you without the risk of looking overdone or frozen.

HOW WRINKLE RELAXERS WORKS

Wrinkle relaxers works by relaxing the muscles responsible for the formation of facial wrinkles. These are called dynamic wrinkles and are most noticeable with extreme facial expressions such as smiling, squinting and frowning. Static lines, which are not caused by muscle activity, may also improve over a period of repeated treatments.

Effectiveness is dependent on the strength of the muscles injected and the individual’s response. This is why I will customise your treatment over time to optimise the results achieved.

COMMON AREAS TREATED

  • Eye area – crows feet extending from the corners of the eyes

  • Frown lines or worry lines – between the eyebrows and often across the forehead

  • Bunny lines – lines running across the bridge of the nose

Other Areas Treated

BOTULINUM TOXIN TREATMENT FOR GUMMY SMILES

Some people feel that when they smile, they show too much of their gums, or that their gums are simply too prominent when they smile – this is often referred to as a ‘gummy smile’. Gummy Smile is a phenomenon that when some people smile, their upper lip elevates too far above their upper teeth, exposing gums and producing an unattractive smile. One of the causes is a hyperactive muscle which elevates the upper lip. Occasionally, the gummy smile is also aggravated by a thin upper lip that further contributes to the problem by exposing the upper gum even more. Fortunately, gummy smile can be simply and effectively corrected with Botulinum toxin (wrinkle relaxer injections) to reduce the activity of the muscle that elevates the upper lip.

WHAT IS GUMMY SMILE TREATMENT & HOW DOES IT WORK?

A small amount of Botulinum toxin will be injected at both sides of the junction of nostril and nose to mouth fold to weaken the muscles.

RESULTS

After treatment it is expected that you will start to see an improvement within 2 or 3 days when the elevation of the upper lip will gradually become less and less. The full result will be achieved 2 weeks after the treatment.

WRINKLE RELAXER TREATMENT FOR UPPER LIP LINES/SMOKERS LINES

These are the vertical lip lines extending from the upper lip and running up towards the nose. They are often referred to as smoker’s lines although they are present in non-smokers too. These lines most commonly appear from our mid 40’s onwards and are often noticed when lipstick “bleeds” beyond the red part of our lip into the surrounding skin.

Wrinkle relaxer injections can successfully treat these lines by relaxing the muscle and stopping the strong pursing of this area without compromising lip function.

WRINKLE RELAXER TREATMENT FOR MARIONETTE LINES

These are the lines running downwards from the corners of the mouth towards the jaw, resulting in an unhappy or sad look. Wrinkle relaxer injections work by relaxing the muscle responsible for pulling the corners of the mouth downwards. Like other treatments around the mouth, the client may also require a little bit of filler placed in the deeper lines to improve the aesthetic result.

WRINKLE RELAXER TREATMENT FOR COBBLESTONE CHIN

Wrinkle relaxer injections are very successful in treating a dimpled or cobblestone chin. They work by relaxing the mentalis muscle resulting in a smoother and more even texture in the overlying skin.

CLINICAL PROCEDURE

After an initial discussion to ascertain your desired outcome I will spend time assessing your facial features and overall skin condition prior to recommending a suitable treatment plan It is not necessary to treat all areas during your initial visit, especially if you are new to this type of treatment. The actual time spent administering the treatment takes only minutes. The injections are virtually painless owing to the fact that very fine diabetic needles are used.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

Results start to become noticeable several days after treatment and are fully achieved after 14 days. These results last up to 3 months, but the benefits can last for longer in younger patients or those who have had several courses of treatment. Contrary to popular belief, wrinkle relaxer injections are not addictive and you will not be worse off once the treatment has faded. If you choose not to have further treatment, these wrinkles will simply return to the way they were initially before any treatment was undertaken.

WHO IS SUITABLE FOR TREATMENT?

Anti-wrinkle injections are suitable for anyone who dislikes the appearance of the fine lines or wrinkles formed due to the excessive use of facial muscles. Generally, most clients will start to consider wrinkle relaxers during their early 30’s and onwards.

Wrinkle relaxers are unsuitable for

  • Pregnant or lactating women

  • Those who have a known allergy to the drug

  • People suffering from a neuromuscular disorder such as MS, Myasthenia Gravis or Eaton Lambert Syndrome

SIDE EFFECTS OF TREATMENT

There can be a small amount of swelling or redness afterwards around the injection zone.

Occasionally, mild bruising or a slight headache can be experienced temporarily.

IS IT SAFE?

Yes, as long as it is carried out by a suitably trained clinician.

In Ireland, only doctors and dentists who have undertaken specific training in this area are permitted to offer this type of treatment because of their in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy.

Wrinkle relaxers are prepared from a purified and stabilised form of botulinum toxin (BTN-A) but is not “toxic” when used correctly in the very diluted doses for aesthetic treatment. It has a long history of use in general medicine to treat a wide range of disorders and has been safely and successfully licensed for use as an aesthetic drug since 2002.
